We are located just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. We are a small hobby exhibitor devoted to the goal of promoting German Shepherds that conform to breed standards, both in conformation and temperament.  We primarily utilize top American show lines, occasionally combined with German show lines to produce a total German Shepherd that is beautiful to look at, and that anyone can be proud to own. Our German Shepherds can be used for showing in conformation, obedience, agility, protection or just for a nice family companion.  If you are looking for a dog solely for the sport of Schutzhund, we recommend that you go to a breeder who specializes in breeding for that purpose because of their high drive and bites work.  You may lose some beauty and gracefulness, as well as correctness of conformation.  The terms that describe the ideal German Shepherd dog here at Fran-San are quality, character, nobility, versatility, intelligence, soundness, loyalty, correct structure and beauty.  The males are strong, masculine and stallion-looking, while the females are feminine and cute.

We first became involved with German Shepherds in 1970, in training for the Obedience Ring.  In 1980, we started breeding and showing dogs for the Conformation Show Ring, and that is what we still do today.  Since we are hobby breeders, we do not make our living through breeding, selling and training dogs.  We try to ensure that each and every dog goes to a good, loving home, and that it will be a perfect fit for its new family.  All of our German Shepherds are black and tan/red in color, and we breed for large bones and good size.  All of our German Shepherds have outstanding temperament, and are very safe with families who have children, babies or cats.  Our German Shepherds are not overly aggressive to friends or strangers who drive up, or come to your door.  They may bark and cut up a little, but this is very normal.

All of our breeding stock over two years old are O.F.A. Certified. Dogs less than two years are Preliminary X-Rayed good as all dogs must be two years old to be O.F.A. Certified.  We screen for temperament and genetic health problems. All pups are guaranteed in writing not to become lame as a result of hip dysplasia up to two years old, and to be in good health.  All pups come with a Sales Contract, AKC registration papers and will be up-to-date on all shots, as well as de-wormed every two weeks until placed.

We are a member of the German Shepherd Dog Club of America, and a member of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Greater Raleigh.  We are also a signer of the Breeder's Code Ethics.  Our German Shepherds are part of our family, bringing us much joy as playmates.  We always give our dogs and pups a good deal of personal attention.  The fact that our German Shepherds have earned show ribbons, trophies and received their Championship Titles for both Conformation and Obedience is simply a plus.

We Believe......

We believe while there are many types of German Shepherds, there should only be one type; the correct type that is structured as a German Shepherd is supposed to conform closely to its Breed Standard.  The ideal dog is stamped with the look of quality and nobility-difficult to define, but unmistakable when present.  Nobility is the key, for without it, the German Shepherd would look common.  Secondary sex characteristics are strongly marked, male masculinity, female femininity (with the females being about 20% smaller than the males)

We believe good character and sound temperament are just as important to the overall dog as beautiful conformation and all the other features.  The German Shepherd should be approachable, quietly standing its ground and showing confidence, not shy nor overly aggressive.  A dog that shrinks behind its owner, or shows signs of being a fear-biter is a very serious fault that comes from bad breeding, or a lack of socialization.  In many cases, a good sound temperament dog can be destroyed by bad discipline, such as hand-beating or whipping with some other object.

We believe a German Shepherd should be of good size, have heavy bones, nice correct head with dark eyes, a nice top line that is not roach or sway, nice front reach, and nice rear angulations that is not over-angulated. A German Shepherd is a trotting dog, and its structure has been developed to meet the requirement of its work.  General impression-the gait is outreaching, elastic, seeming without effort, smooth and rhythmic, covering the maximum amount of ground with a minimum number of steps.

We believe choosing a good breeder that is knowledgeable, honesty, integrity and creditability is very important. A good breeder that is a member of their local and national breed club is the best source for a beautiful well bred healthy German Shepherd and with good temperament. Most of these types of breeders are showing thier dogs in the AKC conformation show rings. Most of these puppies are sold at pet prices even though some may be show quality. It is a "no no" to buy your puppy from an irresponsible back yard breeder, or a puppy mill.
You must remember that the upkeep and veterinary expense are the same for all dogs.
